Billy,
I've got a problem with my tascam 564 and spotted you helped someone out back in 2000. I'm at work and haven't got time to read your site (sorry - I will do) so I don't even know if this is the sort of thing you'll bother replying to. You seem to know a bit about home recording though so it's worth a shot as no-one else has been able to help.
I bounce all my instrumental stuff down on to a couple of the tracks (stereo) - than I do my vocals and backing vocals on the other 2 tracks. My multi effects processor only runs 1 effect at a time - I thought I could put reverb on the vocals, bounce them forward (direct - so everything stays on separate tracks) and then compress them. The only thing is, when you bounce things forward directly, the effects aren't retained. The only way to retain effects is to bounce forward on the buss channels which records everything (so I can't then treat the vocals separately for a second time). There's loads of stuff I want to do in this way but can't for the life of me work out what I'm doing wrong. I've tried using the insert channels but to be honest, I'm not sure what they're all about and I certainly haven't managed to use them to fix my problem successfully.
Can you point me in the right direction?
Much appreciated,
Ty.
BILLY
SEZ Tyman, I do understand what you're on about, alas, my proceedures of recording on the 'Porta' have always been - 1. Rrecord from source; any effects (incl. compression) are used direct to tape. It takes more time and bother especially when you realize too late at mixing but I've found this to work in real studios too. Direction? Go West Young Man! Billy
2. Once (1) has been perfected, the overall performance is enhanced when you can play to what's considered final!

Hi Billy!
Reading through Frankie's bio, he had a short-lived band: "Bees Make Honey" with a drummer Billy Rankin. The person also played drum on his first album:"Once in a full Moon". Was that You-at the age of 12-13?
-just wonder...
Which of his album would be the best introductory?
1982 Fort Pierce (2XS tour), "Trenches" features several tracks. Can You recall the date? I can hear John Locke on keys, still...
Enjoying Your "Sinky's" performance -on tape!
Love & Thanks:
Charles (SHG)
BILLY
SEZ Shame on you, Chuck! Actually, Billy H Rankin played with Brinzley Schwarz, who backed Frankie on his debut 'Once In A Blue (not full) Moon album, which is also the best introductory. The H incidentally stands for Henry. I'm also Billy H Rankin but my 'H' is worse! I once received 78 pence royalties meant for my name-sake, 'wonder if he's got mine? Fort Pierce '82 was 2XS therefore John was there. Barry has full itinerary dates me-thinks, if you're genuinely losing sleep! (Barry's note - Fort Pierce was Sept 12 1982) Love,
Sinky's woz louder than tape could ever convey, be there next time pal.

Billy,
On the credits of your "C'RANKIN'" album, you mention Zal on guitar. What songs did he play on? You also mention on backing vox Dan McCafferty and "Uncle" Pete Agnew. Pete's not really your uncle, is he? I also was wondering if you have ever seen video footage from the 'SNAZ era. It was done by a Canadian TV station, and you guys were being promoted by a radio station called CHUM FM (can't remember the call number). There is a shot of you struggling to get into a pair of REALLY, REALLY, tight pants, and also a close-up of you making a strange face into the camera. The interviewer spoke mostly to Dan and Pete, asking them about the importance of their lyrics, how they "get up" for a show, and how they feel about their biggest hit song, being a cover (you know the one...). They also spoke to Darrell, but briefly. Darrell's comment was "I'm the best drummer in Nazareth, and that's all that matters." Couldn't have said it better myself.:)
It seemed like you were bored on stage, playing rhythm. You seemed like you wanted to "Rip It Up" (no pun intended), but every time you came close, you restricted yourself a little. Did you always feel that way with Manny?
I wanted to thank you for autographing my "C'RANKIN" and "SHAKE" CD's. Manny autographed a few of his CD's for me too. Now every time I have someone over (which is rarely, if ever), I can show them that I have the autographs of 2 rock legends. The only trouble I have is with that inevitable question: "Who the hell is Billy Rankin?" Musically inappreciative swines!!!!!!!! If they only knew what they were missing...
On the credits of "SHAKE", in the "THANKS" section, you mention many famous rockers. Do you really know most of them? Or is that your Scottish sense of humor shining through?
Well Billy, thanks again for your time, and your music. And one last thing... I really wish Pete and Dan would give you and/or Manny a call to come back and work for them. Then you guys could really, "Rip It Up"!!!
THANKS!!!!
AND KEEP ROCKIN'!!!!!!!
CHRIS.
BILLY
SEZ Chris, Zal played on Come On Boys, Crankin' and Look Back In Anger. Dan & Pete sang on Boys & Crankin'. I didn't play rhythm, the video always cuts to Manny during anyone's solo, listen to Snaz with headphones, you'll understand. Canadian TV show I remember, 'ended on a rowing boat, or was that Germany? Thanks for the compliments, you're a pal Chris, though slightly deranged if you think Manny or I work for anyone. Shake's Rockers? I know them all, even Paul n Linda. Cryptic messages abound throughout the sleeve-notes and songs themselves. That's where my Scottish sense of humour comes in. Love
Billy

Bombard Kev with requests of threatened pre-pubescent snapshots of myself and send him to some far-flung Empire (Australia will do!) where he can practice such practices which offend us such!
